The Bowery Artist Tribute is a resource for teachers and their students to explore history and culture in the New Museum’s new neighborhood. It can be utilized as a tool for themes such as neighborhood, social histories of New York, how artists live and work, and documentary practices.
The Bowery Artist Tribute currently exists as an interactive map on the New Museum Web site that illustrates the rich artistic legacy of the neighborhood through cultural institutions, locations of artists’ studios, biographical information, interviews with artists, and a detailed timeline of the Bowery’s history from the 1600’s to the present day. This ongoing project will continue to grow over time to include additional interviews, an updated timeline, and information on art spaces and institutions with over 100 artists who have been living and working in the neighborhood over the past fifty years. A Bowery Artist Tribute publication will be produced in 2008.
